Jonnette Marie

Jonnette Marie Oakes is a creative artist, custom designer, and creative educator whose work blends modern craftsmanship with thoughtful design. Through crochet, fiber art, and hand-designed jean jackets, Jonnette creates wearable and creative pieces that celebrate individuality, confidence, and intentional making. Her work is rooted in the belief that creativity should feel both accessible, elevated, and crafted with care, purpose, and personal meaning.

Jonnette’s creative journey has been shaped by a deep appreciation for process, storytelling, and working with her hands. What began as a love for fiber and design has evolved into a multifaceted creative practice that includes custom pieces, limited releases, workshops, and brand collaborations. She is best known for bridging fiber art and fashion, creating designs that feel expressive, wearable, and deeply personal.

In addition to her creative work, Jonnette serves as an educator for both emerging and experienced makers. Through workshops, tutorials, and digital content, she shares her techniques and creative process to help others build confidence in their skills and approach their work with intention. Her teaching emphasizes patience, craftsmanship, and an understanding of materials as much as technique.

Her approach to creativity is informed by a multidisciplinary background spanning media, law, and storytelling. Jonnette earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Kansas and later completed a Master’s degree in Journalism at the University of Missouri–Columbia. Early in her career, she interned with The Hill and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, where she developed a strong foundation in editorial storytelling, research, and narrative clarity.

She later attended Washburn University School of Law, where she deepened her understanding of intellectual property and creative rights while working as a copyright intern with National Public Radio. Now a licensed attorney, Jonnette brings this knowledge into her creative practice, approaching design, education, and brand collaborations with structure, intention, and respect for creative ownership.

As by Jonnette Marie continues to grow, her work resonates with a community of creatives who value calm, modern design and thoughtful making. At its core, her brand is about creating pieces and experiences that encourage people to slow down, create with care, and feel confident in their creative expression.

Causes

IMG_1010.jpeg

In 2020, I created a Black Lives Matter shirt following the murder of George Floyd. The purpose was to bring attention the injustice inhabiting the black community. For each of the sales made on the shirts, I contributed 10% to a black lives matter cause.

The portion of the proceeds were provided to assist organizations in their fight for justice, prosperity, and safety in black neighborhoods.
